Mames Babegenush

The prize-winning ensemble Mames Babegenush came out of the vibrant cultural milieuin Copenhagen 2005 specializing in the authentic Jewish dance music from EasternEurope and the American bulgar tradition. Over the years the ensemble has exploreddifferent genres of music forging alliances between Jewish music and the multitude ofmusical genres including tango, rock, cumbia, electronica and Israeli.Firmly rooted in klezmer they have created a highly unique and vivid expression strivingalways to renew and push the genre forward.

The ensemble quickly gained a reputation dazzling both audience and critics and was in2008 selected to the Carnegie Hall Young Artist Program by David Krakauer, AliciaSvigals, Michael Alpert and Josh Dolgin (SoCalled).In 2009 they released their much acclaimed debut album “Klezmer Killed the Radio Star”which was nominated for the Danish World Music Awards.One of their career highlights to date is their participation in The 2nd International JewishMusic Competition in Amsterdam, October 2010. As the only ensemble they were thewinner of three prizes – the Jury’s Special Prize for cultural bridge building in music, theBooker’s Prize and the biggest prize of all The Audience Prize.During their career they have played at some at the most storied venues and festivalsworld wide such as Carnegie Hall (New York), The Royal Danish Theater, The DanishNational Concert Hall (DR Koncerthuset), The DROMA Festival '08 (New York),KlezFiesta ´09 (Argentina), VEGA (DK), Roskilde Festival (DK), POPKOMM '10 (Berlin),KlezMore (Vienna), Yiddisch Heritage Festival (Bucharest).Their performances have included some of the most renowned artists like David Krakauer(U.S.), Gogol Bordello (U.S.), SoCalled (CAN), Yuri Yunakov (BGR/U.S.), Christian Dawid(GER), The William Blakes (DK), Middle East Peace Orchestra (DK/GER/U.S./PSE/ISR),Hess Is More (DK) and Kenneth Bager (DK)ReleasesOY!
