Travelling Tribes

Tribal Indie

Travelling Tribes unites lo-fi tribal cries with transistor drums, the power of instincts and grand reverb with the alternative world music scene. Without any limitations of genres or boundaries of expression the Copenhagen situated band sounds as great and alive in a tiny dirty barroom in the busy metropolis as in the sweet shadow of a humid jungle. Through bubbling creativity they gather inspiration from all around the world to make their own music. Unison singing, Chinese cello melodies, African drums, whistling choral parts, atmospheric keyboards and noise guitar mix together in a journey around the globe. The band experience their musical universe as a result of the globalized world of today, a collage as we human beings constantly are exposed to sounds, pictures, news, experiences and impressions from all different cultures. “Being an artist in such a global society it is about impossible not to be affected and inspired by the wild energy that emerge from newly discovered, unexplored or even incomprehensible music and realities of other people, “tribes” or generations” the singer and cello player Lil Lacy says.

Indeed music can be mind-blowing. The many tentacled percussion phenomena Victor Dybbroe remembers his childhood on Bali, where he experienced a shadow play accompanied by a traditional Indonesian Gamelan orchestra. “The many metal gongs and xylophones created an impeccable madness of overtones and sound, that, combined with the light, shadows and intense dance, has transformed to a psychedelic, unexplainable, fever illusion of a memory.”

Exactly this unexplainable experience through music is a big part of what Travelling Tribes are searching for in their live performances.

“Once I met an amazing singer on a beach in Gambia. He was black as the night that encircled us. I could only just see his sparkling white eyes and the moon over these. He sang as he was possessed by some spirit” Emil Jensen, singer and guitar player, tells about adventures from West Africa, “it was absolutely overwhelming, so wild, brutishly and honest. Music can create these great moments of deep passion and pain beyond any boarder of language or religion. As a musician you play music to communicate in this intensity, energy and honesty.”

Travelling Tribes came into being in the common wish to create something new and exiting.

“The globalized world and its world music inspire us. We are not copying any certain genre or tradition, but creating our own music based on all we have been in contact with.” Anders Filipsen, the keyboard player with his roots in the free jazz environment in Copenhagen is without doubt. “To us it’s important to build on top of the music that come to us naturally. Furthermore we are all still wandering tribes and searching individuals, which cross each other in East and West. I guess we in the band are a simple echo of our colorful surroundings, experiences and impressions.”
